The HoBOOken 5K Halloween Run to End Homelessness is The Hoboken Shelter’s biggest fundraising event of the year! Our fundraisers make is possible for the Hoboken Shelter to shelter 50 people nightly, serve 530 meals daily, and offer 1,000 showers weekly for those in need.

We want you to find out more about these great people! Meet the Superhero Squad – fundraising and slaying running goals in preparation for the HoBOOken 5K. You can donate here to help them reach their fundraising goal of $1,000.

Why did you decide to form a team and run the HoBOOken 5K and fundraise for the Hoboken Shelter?

Our core group has known each other for a little over 3 years, we met in Central New Jersey through a recent college grad group on meetup.com. Since then, we’ve spread out over Northern and Central New Jersey and even into Eastern PA. The reason we’re running is mostly on me; after running a 10K in Boulder, CO over the summer I wanted to sign up for another race to keep my training momentum going. Since most of our group has run races before, I decided to reach out to see if anyone wanted to run with me, and to my surprise, almost every single person I asked said yes! I picked the HoBOOken 5K partially because of it’s central location and accessibility for all who wanted to participate, but also because it wasn’t just another race, it was a fundraiser for a really great cause.

Is this your first time getting involved with the Shelter?

Yes, this is our first time!

Tell us about your running…

The great thing about our group is that this race is different for almost every single person. Personally, this will be my fourth street race and second 5K, but we all have different running backgrounds. Five of us completed the Rugged Maniac obstacle race in 2016, several of us have completed races of various distances in the past, and we even have a couple triathlon sprint veterans among us. But, most importantly, we have a handful of race newbies as well! We all train separately due to how spread out across the state we are, but I can’t wait to see how everyone’s training will pay off on the 27th!

Are you are dressing up?

Of course! Our team name, The Superhero Squad, came from the group decision to follow a superhero theme for our costumes, since coordinating 11 costumes wasn’t high on anyone’s to do list. You’ll see everything from Batman and Superman to The Incredibles to Mermaidman and Barnacle Boy.

How are you fundraising and do you have a fundraising target?

We’re reaching out to friends and family in person and through social media to reach our goal of $1,000 raised for the Hoboken Shelter.
