Frequently Asked Questions
You Ask, We Answer!
Here are the most common questions asked by our HoBOOken5K Runners!
What is the HoBOOken5K?
The HoBOOken5K Halloween Run is Hoboken’s one and only charitable, costumed race! Originally founded in 2010 by the Hoboken Elysianettes Running Society, the race has evolved into an exciting fundraising event that benefits the Hoboken Shelter.
The Shelter transforms lives, sheltering 50 people nightly, serving 500 meals daily, and hosting 1,000 showers weekly for those in need. The Hoboken Shelter provides support services to help guests gain employment, achieve independence, and reintegrate into the community. We can only do this with your support.
The HoBOOken5K race directors volunteer their nights and weekends to ensure you have a great race!
You can help support The Shelter by signing up to run and by creating a fundraising page through RaceRoster. Find more information here. There is a fundraising contest and we award prizes to teams and to individuals. This year, our top individual fundraisers will receive a bag of HoBOOken goodies on race Day. We also have a bigger fundraising contest open until Nov. 13th and our top individual fundraiser will be awarded an overnight stay at the W Hotel and the second prize winner will get a month pass to Cyclebar Hoboken. The team that raises the most money by Nov. 13th will receive dinner for 6 at Elysian Cafe. We also have a costume contest, our judges will be on site that morning, and you can go by the judging station, which is near the DJ booth and the Step & Repeat from 9:00 – 9:45 am for a chance to enter. Winners will be announced when we announce the winners of the 5K at 11:15 am. Categories include Best Costume (Individual), Best Couple/Duo, Best Group, Most Creative & Honorable Mention.

Do I need to be a runner to complete the HoBOOken5K race?
NO. The HoBOOken5K is a charity event for the seasoned vet and newbie runner alike. In the spirit of the Hoboken Shelter, which creates community in Hoboken, we want our race to be welcoming. To accommodate those who would like to test their speed and endurance along Hoboken’s wonderful, flat and fast waterfront, we ask that you please line up according to your estimated per-mile pace. If you’re a walker, please stand towards the back of the lineup.
How does a “Team” work compared with a solo runner?
When you register as a team (versus an individual), you get perks like choosing a groovy custom team name and team costume (always encouraged!). Team members can run/walk together (optional). There is no “relay” component to this race, so team members can finish together as a unit or separately.
What is included with my HoBOOken5K registration?
Each registered runner will receive a custom race t-shirt and swag bag with some goodies from our sponsors!
For our Charity runners, each registered runner will receive a custom race t-shirt, custom race bag, and goodies from our sponsors. You also receive a special charity bib. Charity bibs are $100 and the funds directly benefit the Hoboken Shelter.
Is there an age limit for younger runners?
If they can cover (running, jogging, or walking) the 3.1 miles of the HoBOOken5K race course, then they can absolutely participate! Make sure your young runner is registered! If they cannot cover the course, consider enrolling them in the Scary Scurry Kids’ Race.
Can I run with a jogging stroller?
Yes, you can run with a baby stroller. We ask that you start in the rear of the race with the walkers.
Can I run with my dog/cat/turtle?
For the safety of our runners and animal friends, we do not allow animals at our race — but you can come dressed in costume as a dog/cat/turtle/Scooby Doo!
Is the HoBOOken5K timed?
The race will be timed by Compuscore. The timing device will be a b-tag that you will receive attached to your bib. We’ll have timing mats at both the start and the finish, which means your net time will be recorded regardless of when you cross the start line.
Results will be available at Compuscore about a day after the race.
In order to avoid congestion at the start we’ll have minute per mile signs. Please line up at your expected pace per mile (6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11+). Walkers please line up at the back.
Can spectators attend?
Absolutely!! Invite your grandma, dad, mom, aunt, uncle or your bff to see you finish!
